This project, a multimedia collaboration by students at the University of North Texas’ Mayborn School of Journalism, focuses on aspects of mental health, a topic that touches many in our community, especially our students.
Throughout the semester, students researched mental health reporting, including the effects of mental health challenges on peers, residents and others, including athletes and performers. The semester began with a community engagement press conference including the UNT dean of students, head of counseling, community mental health services officials, local community nonprofits and a mental health journalist.
Two professors’ upper-level classes dedicated their semesters to these stories: Hoda Emam’s visual journalism class and Tracy Everbach’s public affairs reporting class. Faculty member Randy Loftis also contributed to this project. These stories offer insights into the experiences of those who face mental health challenges, addressing responses to such challenges, suggesting solutions and exploring shortcomings.
In addition, we have included a list of resources to help those struggling with mental health in the hope our work will bring positive change.
